Why choose us? Other such indoor aquaponic systems don’t acknowledge fish especially a betta, as sentient beings that need space and stimulation for color vitality and long-term health, nor have they paid attention to your viewing experience of your pet. We are fishkeeping with you. We have been testing our custom-made system with a peace lily and a veil-tailed betta with a mystery snail as its only tankmate. Both habitants as well as the plant are so far thriving, with weekly water changes and installation of a heater and air stone. The roots that have made their way into the water keep the betta entertained as it navigates the natural maze emerging within the tank; should ample swimming space one day become an issue we intend to trim some roots, as our research shows this should be ok to do for our specific plant. We are enjoying learning how to keep plant, fish and critter happy in this setup, and so far it is working as well as any tank with mechanical filtering and smart features, and the water parameters have been pristine. Please research your plant and animals thoroughly and like any pet be prepared to have to take care of them. There is no such thing as a ‘self-cleaning’ tank, being a closed ecosystem routine maintenance and water changes will be required. Use a microfibre cloth to gently wipe off any algae that may form on the tank wall over time, as harsh cleaning will scratch acrylic easier than glass. 6 MONTH UPDATE: Our betta and plant are well. We had to rehome our snail as its presence was stressing our betta out who would flare up (its fins) whenever the snail was in the mid to upper portion of the tank. Both betta and plant who have lived symbiotically for the last 6 months, continue to thrive. Our nitrates have always been zero even when we've gone 2 weeks without a water change, which has surprised us.
